La Crosse Schools Won't See Race to the Top Money

That's a few million in extra cash from the feds that La Crosse likely won't see.   Word from the feds today is that Wisconsin's application for 254 million dollars in federal money under the Race to the Top program has been denied.   Doesn't surprise La Crosse school board member Steve Kopp.   He says, based on a number of factors, he didn't think Wisconsin stood much of a chance of collecting the cash anyway.  And figured the time the district spent on signing on to the application was a waste.  Kopp and others on the board were resistant to being a part of the state's Race to the Top application from the start.   Wisconsin's application stiill may be considered at a later date.

Alcohol Video Cotnest

ALCOHOL EDUCATION FOR THE INTERNET GENERATION...

YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WORK WITH LA CROSSE COUNTY'S COALITION ON RISKY DRINKING BEHAVIOR HAVE MADE THEIR OWN VIDEOS ABOUT THE RESPONSIBLE USE OF ALCOHOL. SOME ARE SERIOUS, OTHERS ARE SATIRICAL, BUT THEY'RE ALL ON LINE TO BE VOTED ON THIS WEEK, AT www.thebuzzstopshere.com.

AL BLISS OF THE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT SAYS THE VOTING WILL CONTINUE THROUGH TUESDAY, WITH WINNERS TO BE ANNOUNCED MARCH 10TH AT U-W-L. AL HOPES THAT SOME OF THE VIDEOS MIGHT BE SEEN IN THE FUTURE AS PRE-SHOW ATTRACTIONS IN LOCAL MOVIE THEATERS.

Kitzmann Versus Town Update

A judge says the town of Onalaska has to pay their former administrator.  Now both sides are trying to work out how much compensation is owed to Paul Kitzmann.  The town claimed they had to let Kitzmann go in July due to budget problems.  A judge ruled that wasn't a good enough reason to fire their administrator.  Kitzmann's three year contract wasn't set to expire until January of 2012.  His salary was 50 grand a year.  The towns attorney hopes to have something worked out before the next court date which is scheduled for May.  The town cannot appeal the judge's original decision until compensation is determined.

Census Update

No need to be paranoid about sending in your census form.  LaCrosse county zoning director Jeff Bluske is heading up the local effort to make sure everyone is counted.   He says the survey is completely confidential.  Census workers don't share this information with any department. Bluske says fill out the ten question form or someone with the feds could show up at your door to make sure they get the information from you.  For the first time ever you could also face a fine if you knowingly ignore the once a decade count.  The census determines how much money will be coming into a community for various programs.  With population determining how much each region will receive.  Census forms should start showing up in local mailboxes during the next couple of weeks.

No Saturday Mail?

IN MANY WAYS, THE INTERNET IS REPLACING THE POST OFFICE AS A NORMAL WAY TO COMMUNICATE...

A SHARP DROP IN THE VOLUME OF ITEMS BEING MAILED HAS FORCED THE POSTAL SERVICE TO REVIVE THE IDEA OF ENDING SATURDAY DELIVERIES. IRONICALLY, MARGE OEHLKE FROM THE REGIONAL OFFICE OF THE POSTAL SERVICE IN MILWAUKEE SAYS MORE PEOPLE ARE GOING ON-LINE TO HANDLE THEIR REGULAR MAIL, AT THE OFFICIAL POST OFFICE WEBSITE.

OEHLKE SAYS THE POSTAL SERVICE WILL ALWAYS BE NEEDED FOR IMPORTANT BUSINESS DELIVERIES, EVEN AS THE AMOUNT OF PERSONAL MAIL GOES DOWN.
