Student Drunk, Tries to Climb Into Burning House
Who else besides firefighters run into a burning house? Now, an answer to that age old rhetorical question, care of a La Crosse college student. Police say they pulled a 19 year-old off of a garage sitting about five feet away from a house that was engulfed in flames early Sunday morning on North 14th street. Apparently the young guy was trying to climb in to the burning house. His explanation: he was attempting to help firefighters look for anybody inside. Claimed he had lost a friend in a fire years ago. He was, by the way, quite drunk. That Sunday morning fire on 14th street is still under investigation.

Re-Done Ordinance Gets Workout With Council ReplacementIt's a re-worked ordinance that will be used to likely fill a temporary vacancy on the La Crosse city council. It was just this past April that members finally agreed on changes to an ordinance for filling vacancies on the council. The changes came out of a desire to give the council as a whole more control over the process. In the past, if the council president refused to fill an empty seat, than it didn't get filled. Now, with council member Mike Larsen on a disability leave of absence, it's council president Audrey Kader who's proposing filling the seat temporarily, a process that's also part of that re-worked ordinance. Kader says she's filling the seat at Larsen's request. Kader also says, after weeks of consideration, she decided on proposing to fill the seat with former 5th district council member Jacie Gamroth.
Yes Sir, And Will You Be Having the 8-Ball With Your Steak?A disagreement over a bloody steak has landed an apparent cocaine dealer in the clink. La Crosse cops say Matthew Ewing made a ruckus over an underdone dinner delivered at a restaurant just south of Riverside Park Wednesday night around 10. Apparently, the restaurant called the cops on the guy. And, they say the 24 year-old Ewing still wasn't a pleasant person when a cop showed up. Wound up in a tussle with the cop. Finally cuffed. On him they found ten grams of coke, nearly four thousand dollars in cash and two cell phones with text messages that read something like, "can you get me an eight ball?" Ewing faces a number of charges.

Pit Bull Jumps, Bites and RunsA La Crosse teen is nursing a wound he received at the jaws of a pit bull on the city's southside. Police say the 13 year-old was walking on the sidewalk on the five hundred block of Hood street last night around eight. As he passed a woman and her pit bull going the other way, the dog jumped up and got a mouthful of flesh right under the boy's arm. He was treated at the hospital. Police are still looking for the woman and the dog.
Whitman Hired as UWL Athletic DirectorThe new athletic director at U-W-La Crosse has taken an unusual path to that job...
Josh Whitman was a college football player who went to the N-F-L, and he's been an assistant A-D at the University of Illinois. But right now, Whitman is a lawyer in Washington, D-C. Whitman says his law career has been part of a plan to become an athletic director, because a lawyer has the skills to communicate, and advocate for a cause. Whitman likes the university's commitment to developing champions on the field, and in the classroom. He succeeds Joe Baker, who is now A-D at Carroll University in Waukesha.
