Dems File Another Kapanke Complaint
The complaint expected to be filed Wednesday with the Government Accountability Board alleges that Kapanke illegally used money from a nonprofit foundation that accepts money from groups that employ lobbyists to pay off debt he owes to the city of La Crosse.
The complaint alleges Kapanke used nearly $17,000 from the foundation to pay the city back for lighting it installed at the field where the La Crosse Loggers play. Kapanke owns the Northwoods League team.
Kapanke did not immediately return a message seeking comment. He and Bruce Evers are seeking the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Ron Kind.
The Little Car That CouldIt's amazing the kind of abuse cars can take before they run out of steam. Like the little Pontiac Sunfire that 22 year old Kimberly Dickinson was driving early this morning in the northside industrial park in La Crosse. Police say the Onalaska woman hit a guard rail and a concrete post and then continued driving for quite a ways before finally coming to a stop. It's suprising she was able to go at all. Both airbags had deployed, her windshield was smashed, the rear bumper had nearly fallen off, the front passenger tire was flat, the rim solidly bent, rivers of various fluids leaking. Dickinson said she had two drinks at a bar in West Salem. Probably more than that; police say she blew a .20.
Bradley for Assembly at Your Door, in the LibraryHaven't met Julian Bradley yet? Just wait. He's coming. The affable, young Bradley's using the shake-every-single-hand technique to win La Crosse's state assembly seat. It's been some work. Especially, he says, with how warm it's been. Bradley's grateful for the dedication of his volunteers who have helped with reaching out to potential voters. The Republican holds a couple of town hall-style meetings today in two of La Crosse's libraries. He'll be at the main library at 1:00 and at the North Branch at 5:30. |
Apparent Meth Dealer Busted Behind BarsLa Crosse police didn't have to look far to bust the latest drug dealer in the city. Cops found Steven Huber Byers in jail already when they arrested him for dealing meth on the street. Cops had used an informant last month to get the goods on Huber Byers. Police say he sold their guy two and a half grams of meth in a little zip-loc bag for $180. Due to the nature of the investigation they weren't able to arrest the 24 year-old at the time of the drug deal. So he made it convenient for them by getting busted for something else.
Grand River Station: Behind But Nearly OpenIt's been a long time coming. A little longer than originally thought, actually. The Grand River Station Transit Center in downtown La Crosse. A grand opening for the center this week. About ten months after it was supposed to be open. City Public Works director Dale Hexom says original plans needed additional details worked out before contractors could even begin the project, which led to some delays. But complications with financing also pushed the completion of the transit center back. Hexom says the building will come in close to its original 23 million dollar budget. But, with bills for the project still coming in, at this point he's not sure how close. |
