Outside Consultant on Patros Deal Approved

Spending two million dollars on three good acres near the river? Agreed to unanimously by the La Crosse city council this week. Buying the Patros property--eleven acres total---turns out to be no problem for anyone on the council.  What some council members really got hung up on was spending 30 grand on an outside firm to do some TIF district amendment work to make the deal a go. Some asked Why do that when there's the city planners office?   City planner Larry Kirch tells city council he would do as they wished but, because the deal seems to have a deadline; getting outside help would speed the process along.  The 30 grand has been given preliminary approval.
 

Jail Time For Man Who Killed Kitten

OVER A YEAR AGO, PHILLIP ATKINSON WAS JAILED FOR BEATING UP HIS MOTHER, AND FOR KILLING HIS GIRLFRIEND'S KITTEN IN A FIT OF ANGER.

NOW, THE LA CROSSE MAN WILL SPEND A YEAR IN JAIL, FOLLOWED BY PROBATION AND TREATMENT FOR ANGER AND DRINKING ISSUES. ATKINSON SAID IN COURT YESTERDAY THAT HAVING A CHILD HAS HELPED HIM WANT TO CHANGE. AND HIS GIRLFRIEND, THE CHILD'S MOTHER, AGREES THAT HIS SUPPORT HAS BEEN GOOD.  PHILLIP'S MOTHER WROTE A LETTER TO JUDGE RAMONA GONZALEZ, SAYING CHILDHOOD TRAUMAS AND ATTENTION-DEFICIT PROBLEMS HAVE TROUBLED HIM FOR YEARS.

 

Hillview Expansion

The LaCrosse county board might have the votes to build a new assisted living facility at Hillview.  But, board member Ray Ebert is one of the few who continues to believe the project is a bad idea. Ebert feels adding another county facility would only take away business from privately owned care.  The board will take a final vote on the construction project next month after they get the final financial details.

 

River Rescue Near Bridges

AS LONG AS THERE'S ICE, THE RIVER MAY NOT BE NICE...

ONE LOCAL FISHERMAN FOUND HIMSELF STUCK ON THE RIVER NEAR THE CASS STREET BRIDGE BECAUSE OF ICE TUESDAY AFTERNOON. WITH SOME HELP FROM LA CROSSE FIREMEN, THE MAN WAS ABLE TO GET HIMSELF AND HIS BOAT TO PETTIBONE BEACH SAFELY. BUT FIRE DEPARTMENT LIEUTENANT DAVE SNOW SAYS ICE REMAINS A HAZARD, EVEN AS THE WEATHER GETS WARMER. SNOW SAYS THE RESCUE EFFORT TOOK ABOUT 20 MINUTES.

 

LOCAL STUDENT ATHLETE ON HIS WAY TO HAITI

A student athlete at UW-LaCrosse is going to help earthquake survivors. Senior Conner Lonning says with all the great opportunities in his life he would like to help out.  Lonning is leaving Saturday for Haiti and plans on spending about ten days helping people there.  He's bringing his money and funds collected from his track and cross country teams and his friends at work at the Eagle's Nest Bar.
