Sheriff And Van Hollen Speak About Koula Arrest

Law officers from throughout the La Crosse area showed up for this news conference...and so did the state attorney general.

They were present today as La Crosse County Sheriff Steve Helgeson spoke about the arrest of 40-year-old Eric Koula for the May shooting deaths of his parents. Helgeson says financial gain was Eric's motive for killing Dennis and Merna Koula. Attorney General J-B Van Hollen touted the state's assistance in the murder probe...and said D-A Tim Gruenke can't tell as much as he would like to about the case.  Gruenke says Eric Koula was interviewed more tan once about the murders, but he won't say how early Eric was considered a suspect.

 

Son Charged With Murders Of Barre Mills Couple

A suspect is arrested in the double murder of a Barre Mills couple...

That suspect is the couple's 40-year-old son. Eric Koula of West Salem is being charged with the May shooting deaths of his parents, Dennis and Merna Koula, at their rural home. The younger Koula also is charged with forgery. The La Crosse County Sheriff's Department worked with state agents to find a suspect. Sheriff Steve Helgeson has planned a news conference for tomorrow to discuss the arrest.

 

Harter Says Certain Meetings Were A Mistake

La Crosse's mayor says he wouldn't do it again...

Matt Harter tells reporters that in the future, he will avoid taking part in meetings affecting his family's waste disposal business.

Harter's comments come after a law firm concluded that he violated city ethics by meeting with the county solid waste director, and bringing his father to the meeting. He says the ethics board, the district attorney, and the state justice department to review the situation and give advice on how to avoid problems again.

 

STANDOFF IN LACROSSE

A brief standoff comes to an end.  LaCrosse police responded to a domestic disturbance at a home on Adams street.  Apparently a couple got into an argument.  Eventually cops were called and a guy remained in the house threatening to shoot himself.  Police persuaded the guy to give himself up a little before 9am.

 

Salvation Army Program Aims to Help Kids Back to School

You've probably already seen the back to school displays in stores. Some won't take advantage of any of that. Not without your help. The Salvation Army in La Crosse has cranked up its Steppin' Back to School program. And they're looking for sponsors, says Julie Nelson with the Salvation Army in La Crosse.  She's hoping for new pants, shirt and shoes for each of the 290 kids registered in the Steppin' Back To School program.
