Bond For Drug Suspect Set At $100K

Written by

How serious are the drug charges against Eugene Shields of La Crosse?

Serious enough for a judge to set his bond at 100-thousand dollars cash. The D-A's office plans to have a full list of charges ready by Friday. Shields was arrested Monday, after a raid of a building on State Road involving local police and the FBI. Because the drugs found in the building have a street value around 10-thousand dollars, the prosecution said Shields probably has access to plenty of money, so the cash bond should be set high.

With 100-thousand dollars at stake, a couple dozen community groups in the La Crosse area have started working on plans to halt hunger in the region.

Two proposals have been entered in the 'Food For All' competition, sponsored by the Franke Foundation. Franke director Mel Hoffman is pleased that the ideas submitted do not call for creating any new organizations to deal with hunger.  The project's goal is to find ways of supplying food to local people who can't get it now. The 100-thousand dollar prize for the best idea will be awarded next March.

City Hall Now A Drive Through

Written by

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) Eau Claire police say the driver who crashed into City Hall was under the influence of drugs.

The 42-year woman was not seriously injured when she crashed into a side entrance of the building Tuesday about 5:30 p.m. Police arrested her on probable charges of operating under the influence-third offense and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Salina Heller was working in the office on the other side of the wall at the time of the crash. Heller says the impact sounded like an explosion. Heller says she would have used that door to leave work, but fortunately was working late Tuesday.

Part of the building entrance landed on top of the car.

Winter, Spring Summer or Fall??

Written by

MILWAUKEE (AP) A mix of rain, sleet and snow in Wisconsin is making travel difficult and has knocked out power to thousands.

We Energies is working on restoring power to nearly 16,000 customers in the Fox Valley. Another 3,100 Wisconsin Public Service customers are also without power in the Oshkosh area.
Appleton Medical Center is running on a backup generator and has canceled all morning cardiac appointments.

The National Weather Service says a series of storms will sweep across the state through Thursday, bringing heavy rain, snow and ice. Areas north of the Interstate 90-94 corridor could get 6 inches of snow, while areas to the south could see 1 to 3 inches. West central Wisconsin could see a quarter-inch of ice accumulation.

Got Property!

Written by

MADISON, Wis. (AP) State wildlife officials are looking for property owners willing to open up their land for this fall's gun deer hunt for the disabled.

The hunt began in 1990 to give the disabled a chance to go after deer while temperatures are still relatively mild. The hunts take place almost entirely on private land. Last year more than 450 hunters participated.

This year's hunt is set for Oct. 5-13.

Anyone interested opening up their land for the hunt can submit applications through the Department of Natural Resources' website. The deadline is June 1.
