You want more proof of how hot the summer of 2012 has been in La Crosse?

Only one year on record has had more days over 90 degrees than this year in the city. We've seen temps above 90 on 37 days...compared to the 1988 mark of 46 very hot days. The National Weather Service also reports 13 days above 95 degrees, and three days this year when we had at least 100 degrees. All of those figures are well above the average number of days with excessive heat. The weather service says La Crosse's temperatures in July resembled those of a typical summer in Miami.

Balloon Biz Goes Bust Over Helium Shortage

Written by

According to an old saying, 'what goes up must come down.'

Helium gas goes up, but the supply of helium is way down around America this year. Companies that sell the gas report a worldwide shortage, and the U-S government is selling domestic helium supplies to other countries. A co-owner of Family Tree Floral in West Salem, Clair Bissen, doesn't like it...and if you think Bissen is upset, imagine how his customers feel.  He says they've gone to other stores because he can't sell helium balloons.  Bissen says his store's helium supply was cut off weeks ago. The price of a tank of helium, good for about 150 balloons, is up about 30 per cent in some places.

Companies that cause air pollution are accused of buying members of Congress through campaign contributions...

A study by two environmental groups says the lawmakers who get the most money from large polluters are most likely to vote against clean-air bills that could hurt those companies. Four House Republicans from Wisconsin, and Senator Ron Johnson, are labeled as 'villains' for opposing all 13 bills aimed at protecting air quality.  Area Democrats Ron Kind and Tim Walz were on the low end of the contribution scale. They were listed as supporting most, but not all, of the clean air bills monitored by the interest groups.  Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin was listed as Wisconsin's only 'clean air hero.'
