Unemployment In Minnesota Looks Brighter

Written by

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Minnesota's unemployment rate is continuing its downward trend.  The Department of Employment and Economic Security announced Thursday that the state had a 5.2 percent jobless rate in June. That's a tenth of a percent lower from where it was in May.

The department says Minnesota employers added 400 jobs in June. That was thanks to a 2,500-job increase in the private sector, which was offset by a 2,100-job loss in government employment.

The state has added 54,100 jobs in the last year, for a growth rate of 2 percent. The U.S. growth rate during that time was 1.7 percent.

Minnesota's economy has consistently outperformed that of the U.S., which in May had a 7.6 percent unemployment rate. Minnesota has now regained 95 percent of the jobs lost during the recession.

Ball Attacker Busted

Written by

MADISON, Wis. (AP) The fourth and final person charged in an attack on former Badgers running back Montee Ball is in custody. Twenty-eight-year-old Karlis Griffin was arrested on a warrant in Chicago last week. Griffin is in the Dane County Jail.

A criminal complaint says Griffin stomped on Ball's head during last summer's attack as Ball was walking home with three friends in Madison at bar time. Ball suffered a concussion and says he doesn't remember the attack. Griffin has a prior felony battery conviction in Wisconsin.

Ball was taken in the second round of the National Football League draft by the Denver Broncos.

Missing Two Year Old Found In Car Trunk

Written by

BALSAM LAKE, Wis. (AP) Sheriff's officials say the body of a missing western Wisconsin toddler has been found in the trunk of a car near his home. Two-year-old Isaiah Theis has been the subject of a widespread search since his disappearance Tuesday evening in Polk County.

The sheriff's department issued a statement Thursday which says searchers had looked into the locked vehicle and the area around it after the boy went missing from his home near Centuria. When the owner of the car arrived to remove it about 10 p.m. Wednesday, a deputy opened the trunk and found the boy's body.

Authorities say the cause and manner of the child's death is under investigation.
