Park Stickers On Sale Today

Written by

(AP) Next year's Wisconsin state park admission stickers are set to go on sale this weekend. The stickers grant year-round admission to more than 60 state parks, forests and recreation areas. They'll go on sale Saturday at state park facilities and Department of Natural Resources service centers around the state. They cost $25 for Wisconsin residents, $10 for Wisconsin senior citizens and $35 for out-of-state residents.

The stickers feature a drawing of marshmallows roasting over a campfire. Waukesha South High School sophomore Holly Jo Cegielski submitted the design in a statewide contest.

Annual state trail passes for 2013 will go on sale on Saturday as well. They run $20 for both state residents and non-residents.

Those Trees Will Have To Go

Written by

It's 'absolutely necessary' to get rid of most of La Crosse's ash trees...

That's what one expert told the La Crosse Park Board last night, before the board voted to take down all of the ash trees on four pieces of city property. The reason...to prevent the emerald ash borer from killing those trees. Evidence of the insect's presence in La Crosse was confirmed this month, when a blighted tree was discovered at Valley View Mall. If the city council approves the plan, hundreds of ash trees will be cut up into chips, which will be stockpiled at West Copeland Park.

Superintendent Found Dead

Written by

Investigators have found the body of the Osseo-Fairchild School District Superintendent. A news release from the Barron County Sheriff’s Department says that deputies found the body of Dennis Geissler on Wednesday at a home in Barron County.

Osseo-Fairchild Middle/Senior High Principal Bill Tourdot told police on Wednesday afternoon that he had not heard from Geissler in several days, and when he had stopped at the house, he found Geissler dead in his car in the garage.

Investigators believe Geissler died of carbon monoxide poisoning, but are analyzing toxicology evidence to determine exactly how he died.

Rate Of HIV Infection Rising In Wisconsin

Written by

The AIDS outbreak doesn't get as much public attention as it did in the 80's and 90's, but the rate of infection is growing in Wisconsin and other places.

The head of the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin, Mike Gifford, says hundreds of new HIV infections are reported yearly in the state. The number of new cases last year was up 19 per cent from the number reported in 2010.

Gifford supports a call by a national task force to do routine testing for the AIDS virus among patients 15 and older.

Cutting All Ash Trees Not 'Proven' To Stop Ash Borer

Written by

The mass removal of ash trees is not a proven method for stopping the spread of the emerald ash borer...

That word from a Minnesota agriculture spokeswoman comes as the Gopher State plans to use stingless wasps to destroy the ash borer population there. Liz Erickson of the MDA says a test release of wasps in Houston County hasn't lasted long enough to show that it works.  The city of La Crosse is talking about cutting down all ash trees in certain parks, to keep the ash borer from killing the trees. The park board may vote on the clear-cutting plan tonight.
