For those of us who have stepped onto a school campus or into a school cafeteria in the United States, it is hard not to notice the abundance of bad food choices. Greasy pizza, fried snacks
and flavored milks are some of the unhealthy lunch choices out there. This is probably not anything shocking or new. The dilemma has been how to remedy the situation.
One of the combative efforts has been the Child Nutrition Act. For some time, first Lady Michelle Obama has championed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Although this program has been met with opposition President Obama Monday signed the bill that turned the child nutrition bill into law.
The bill will cost $4.5 billion dollars.
The money will be used to increase the number of children in school lunch programs. In addition, unhealthy food choices will be replaced with better options. Lacrosse School Nutritionist, Joni Ralph, says she likes what she has seen so far.....what happens down to the road.....well that remains to be seen.
The Mississippi River remains a couple feet higher than normal indicating water still is draining through the tributary systems. And with all this snow.......spring flooding gonna be a problem?
Mike Welvaert, hydrologist with the National Weather Service in La Crosse says near-record snowfalls on top of waterlogged soils combined with rivers and streams still draining heavy autumn rains mean a higher-than-normal chance of spring flooding in the Coulee Region, especially between La Crosse and Eau Claire.
He says with rivers and streams not being able to rid themselves of all the water we had 2 months ago, expect some higher levels of flooding.
First, his wife went down....now....a Tomah man will follow her to prison after his sentencing.
58 year old Dennis Deeny was a part owner of Affordable Homes and kept over $200 grand of monies collected after the sale of 4 homes. Now he will spend the next 21 months in prison for bank fraud.
His 43 year old wife, Yvonne, has already been sentenced to 3 years behind bars after being charged with 47 counts of forgery and fraudulent writings by a corporate officer.
Deeny’s crime had serious consequences on his business partner, Gary Koznick, who had to repay the bank despite not taking a salary from Affordable Homes for a few years.
As many as 10 vehicles are involved in an early morning pileup on the I-90 bridge between Wisconsin and Minnesota. The eastbound lanes are closed while crews work to clear the accident. There are no reports of injuries.
Before the term "home invasion" came in use, the term "hot burglary" was often used in literature. In that case....it has been quite hot in the Village of Holmen lately.Several home invasions have taken place.
Holmen Police Chief Mike McHugh says they have also experienced several attempted home invasions as well. They are taking place at night and in the early morning when people are home. Even this past weekend while it was snowing! The bold perp is stealing purses, briefcases and cash.
McHugh says do not attempt to collar the thieves......just call 911
