It's a busy week in the La Crosse County Clerk's office this week. Besides training for the upcoming recall elections. Clerk Ginny Denkmeyer explains what else has to be done before May 8th.
The recall elections will target against Governor Scott Walker, Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch and four Republican state senators.
Unemployment, lack of education, having a single parent in a home...
All of those conditions can be factors leading to child abuse. And two family service agencies in La Crosse are working together on a program to deal with those risk factors. Mike Boehm, the CEO of the Family and Children's Center, says only about one-third of the local families that could use those services can get access to them now.
The "Partnership for Families" also includes the Parenting Place on Green Bay Street in La Crosse. The project will help those organizations visit the homes of families where children could face abuse.
So will people ride a new 3 county bus route traveling from La Crosse to Vernon to Crawford counties starting in July? Peter Fletcher, a transportation planner at the Mississippi River Regional Planning Commission, says from what he has heard so far......yes.
One of the routes will start in Genoa and travel along Highway 35 to Stoddard, La Crosse, and then on Highway 14 to Coon Valley, Westby and Viroqua. Another bus will follow the same route, but in the opposite direction. A third bus will begin in Viroqua, traveling down Highway 27 to Mt. Sterling, Eastman and Prairie du Chien.
Wisconsin graduated more high school students in 2009 than it did in 2002 and is just shy of a 90% statewide graduation rate, according to a new national education report released this week. The La Crosse School District's Troy Harcey talked with WIZM news about the report.
The district's graduation rate is at 94%. Wisconsin's graduation rate was 89.6% in 2008, an slight increase from 84.8% in 2002.
The Wisconsin Conservation Congress in conjunction with Dr. James Kroll, announced they will hold six town hall meetings around Wisconsin from April 16th-21st. The purpose is to gather ideas and solutions from people, sportsmen and sportswomen to help forge a new age for Wisconsin’s deer management practices. Kroll is Wisconsin’s white tailed deer trustee who has been contracted by the State of Wisconsin to conduct an independent, objective and scientifically based review of Wisconsin’s deer management practices.
Locally, a hearing will be held in Black River Falls on Thursday, April 19th.
