A plea hearing in a decade-old murder case has been cancelled in Monroe County...
The D-A's office in Sparta tells us that the attorney for Larry Schaffer has called off the hearing for a negotiated plea which was set for Tuesday morning. That means Schaffer will go ahead with a trial in August for the 2002 murders of Kale Kvistad and Connie de George. Police believe Schaffer shot the couple after a drug-related robbery. He was charged with the murders about 18 months ago.
In her 8 years as Executive Director of the Coulee Region Humane Society, Heather Schmid says she has seen the stray dog population go way down. As for cats? Well.....that's still another story.
She says education on the matter has gotten better over the years....but it will take the entire community to become educated on the dog adn cat populations to keep them down. Schmid's last day at the Humane Society is tomorrow.
A Sparta man, who was charged with vehicular homicide for a 2009 drunk driving crash that killed his brother, was back in a Monroe County courtroom this morning. 26 year old Jason Schodeberg was arrested 2 weeks ago for allegedly driving drunk and crashing a vehicle July 26th, 2009 on Highway 33 near Cashton. His brother, 30 year old Glenn Schodeberg of Leon, was found pinned beneath it. He was dead at the scene.
Schodeberg is still waiting for the county to appoint him an attorney. At the time of the accident, investigators could not determine who was driving the vehicle.
The La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry department is asking that that residents adopt a tree or trees in your neighborhood during this very dry time by watering them each day for a short period of time. Any extra watering attention given to the trees will help relieve drought stress.
Signs of drought stress are the leaves turning yellow or brown and falling off the tree. This will start in the middle or at the top of the leaf mass.
The most advantageous method of watering these trees and shrubs is to let your garden hose trickle at the base of the tree. Do this for 4-5 hours each time, twice a week, until we receive some substantial rain.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department.
Four Republicans running for the U-S Senate in Wisconsin like to describe themselves as conservatives...and like to call Democrat Tammy Baldwin one of the most liberal members in Congress.
One blogger on the right says he doesn't know any conservatives who expect Baldwin to win the seat being vacated by Herb Kohl. Baldwin tells us that she expected to be stuck with the 'liberal' label when she launched her campaign. Baldwin visited Riverfest in La Crosse last week, and spoke about providing more economic relief to the middle class.
