Change of plans, for anyone who might want to visit the Salvation Army 'cooling center' in La Crosse tonight...
The county health department tells us that there are technical problems at the Salvation Army, so a different site will be used...14th and Pine, at the United Campus Ministry. There will be cots for about 20 people there. It's not known yet whether a cooling center will be needed again for Friday night.
You are expected to bring bedding and personal medications. NO PETS are allowed. All visitors will be screened with a breathalyzer test.
2 of the biggest events at Riverfest, The Chileda Run/Walk on Saturday and tonight's Walk a MIle in Her Shoes events are both still going on as planned. Tammy Klein talks about both events.
She says they will modify the events if need be. That depends on the temps and the partcicpants in the events.
So how will you know if you been out in the heat too long? Dr. Joe Bane of Fransiscan Skemp answers that question.
He says if you see someone else that has a flushed face.....maybe throwing up or acting strangely...you may want to get them some help right away.
An overnight cooling center will be available tonight from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am at the Salvation Army location at 223 N. 8th Street. Residents are asked to call 2-1-1 for further information. A cool place and cots are
A car fire fee may or may not go into place in the West Salem fire district after a vote this week by the village board. The board voted down the proposed five hundred dollar car fire fee on Tuesday after an appeal by the volunteer fire department which contends, among other things, the fee will discourage people from calling about a car fire until it's too late. The fire district board along with the towns of Barre and Hamilton have already approved the fee, however, so it's unclear whether it will still take effect despite the West SAlem village board vote. The fee would only be charged for those car fires that occur along state-maintained highways.
