Anything but quiet on La Crosse county roads for 2011. Final DOT tally of deadly accidents in the county for the year shows a significant spike for La Crosse, 17 total. That's a jump from 6 fatal crashes the year before. Five year average for the county in a year's time is just eight fatalaties. Among the deadly accidents were two that involved pedestrians. Trempealeau county also saw a jump in deadly crashes, from 3 in 2010 to 8 last year. Vernon county also increased but by a less significant amount. Monroe county saw a decrease in road fatalities.
La Crosse might put in some money to pay for a new study. This one would consider whether it makes sense to move interstate exit 3 in order to spark some economic life in the area. Just a few thousand dollars for the study but moving the exit could have a huge impact, says Andrea Richmond whose district covers the exit 3 area
The council this month will vote on whether to help pay for a study. The DOT already has plans in place for rebuilding the aging interchange.
Wish granted for La Crosse's public works director. Late last year, Dale Hexom told us he was hoping for brown Christmas. Not in a scroogie kind of way. Just because having no snow to plow is good for his budget. He got the brown ground and a whole lot more. Nothing white in the forecast for the rest of this week, either. Hexom says that's saved money in overtime for certain. But then there's salt and equipment maintenance...
Hexom says, what was looking like a year-end deficit in fuel cost for his department has now turned into a fuel cost surplus.
About 4 years ago......The BRAC Commission closed the La Crosse Naval Reserve Center, which had a strong military influence in the area since the 1940's. A piece of that strength is coming back to the area next week. That's when the Navy League of the United States will charter the La Crosse Area Council of the Navy League. Jim Mac Arthur of West Salem is the area council organizer.
The Navy League supports servicemen and women, their units and families....as well as youth programs such as Navy ROTC....Junior ROTC and Naval Sea Cadet's. Nationwid, the council is over 50 thousand members strong.
Learn about the new voter ID law at these sites next week. All of the events are free to attend.
