Couple Sentenced(AP) A Buffalo County couple has been sentenced for embezzling from their disabled son who was wounded while serving in Iraq. Prosecutors say the couple embezzled as much as $167 thousand from their son's bank accounts, which were under guardianship of a Minneapolis company. Health Care Vote Today in WashingtonThe fever among some to repeal federal health care overhauls might be high now. But that fever will wane over time, says Shannon Nelson, with the Wisconsin watchdog group, WISPIRG. Nelson says as parts of the law go into effect through 2014, Americans will embrace the changes more because by that time the nation will see the increases in health care costs substantially curbed. The house in Washington is expected to vote today on whether to repeal last year's health care reforms. Most expectations are the senate won't vote on such a measure at all.
Monroe County Board Goes No WhereIt was meant to finally answer questions of where, when and how much when talking about a new Monroe County Justice Center. After 4 hours Tuesday night, the Special Meeting of the Monroe County Board was summed up by supervisor, Gale Champman. "We wasted $1000 of taxpayer money tonight and 24 grown adults sat here for 4 hours and did nothing".
8 discussion points were on the table....things ranging from justice programs, cost, locations and jail remodeling and expansion needs. Only 2 points actually made it to discussion....and after they were brought up.....several resolutions were brought up as well....picked apart......then voted down....leaving the talking points where they lay....on paper. It all comes on the heels of a study done in 2007 that stated the courthouse and jail had serious security issues and more jail beds and space were needed. Supervisor Brian Buswell stated that not since 1896 when the courthouse in Sparta was built....has any board ever thought about future needs. Small remodels and additions were done on 3 separate occasions, but Buswell said that is not even close to being enough. And after saying the issue of expansion has gone no where in 21 years......he questions now....whether anything will ever get done. No word on any other specials meetings for the board in the near future. "Smoke" Reappears, Busted on Two Year-Old ChargeWhen you promise police to help them out to stay out of trouble, best to follow through. A course of action apparently lost on Alan Laughlin. La Crosse guy, nicknamed "Smoke." A couple years ago, police nabbed Smoke for dealing pot. Said, if they let him go, he'd help cops bust a dealer higher up the food chain . Never did. So, when police caught up to the 34 year-old Laughlin a few days ago, he wasn't surprised that he'd have to face up to that two year old drug dealing charge. At the time of his original arrest, Laughlin claimed the several bags of pot he had on him were for personal use.
