Library Task Force Meets For 1st Time Next Week

Written by

When a branch library in La Crosse was saved from closing last year, Mayor Tim Kabat talked about naming a task force to examine ways of funding the library system.

That task force is now in place, and has its first meeting next Tuesday at City Hall. Library director Kelly Krieg-Sigman says residents of library neighborhoods will serve on the panel, along with city council members.

Customers of the South Branch library protested last fall, when the library board briefly suggested closing the branch on 16th Street under city orders to make large budget cuts.

Twenty four hours, one musical, infinite fun...

That's the slogan for a stage experiment happening this weekend at La Crescent High School. It's called the '24 hour musical,' because a cast and crew will spend 24 hours straight rehearsing a full musical before performing it for an audience. That's not much time to memorize lines and songs, but choreographer Jon Lamb says they'll work around that challenge, perhaps by finding ways to hide the scripts on stage.

The show will be either 'Godspell' or 'All Shook Up,' which is based on Elvis Presley songs. The Appleseed Community Theatre chose the winning musical months ago, but will not reveal which show is being done until tomorrow night.

Onalaska will still celebrate the 4th of July with music and fireworks this summer...but not exactly in the same way as usual.

The city traditionally stages its fireworks on the weekend before the 4th, after an outdoor concert by the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. But this year, the Symphony has withdrawn from the program because of a lack of funding. Kelly Poppele from Festival Foods, which organizes the celebration, says a different musical act has been hired for the June 28th program. The name of the act will be announced in about a month.
