Clearly a couple of the latest hotel developments in downtown La Crosse are thinking there will be guests in rooms soon. A La Crosse city council committee tonight considers approval of liquor licenses for both the Charmant Hotel and the Hampton Inn and Suites. The Charmant is the massive renovation project of an old candy factory next to Riverside Park. The Hampton is just a couple blocks away at Second and La Crosse streets. No word yet on definite opening dates for either.
La Crosse's Congressman is being given credit for helping the White House pass fast-track trade authority last week. Ron Kind is modest about his role in getting the bill passed...except for suggesting that President Obama put off a trip to La Crosse, until after the bill was voted on. Obama's visit to UW-L is now set for this Thursday, at the Recreational Eagle Center on campus. Kind expects Obama to speak here about his campaign to make more workers eligible for overtime pay.
Local democrats are cheering for the arrival of the man that's on top of their party, President Barack Obama. And yes, State Senator Jennifer Shilling has already heard from folks that are bracing for major traffic ties up's while Obama visits UW-L Thursday. But Shilling says to have the President of The United States in La Crosse is all worth a few hours of traffic messes.
The plan for a possible riverfront entrance at the La Crosse Center gets another look from the center board of directors today. A consulting firm is expected to have a new set of renderings for potential center expansion plans...including a west side balcony and staircase. The main entrance to the civic center has been on the east side of the building since it opened in 1980. However, board members want to make the center more attractive on the side that faces the river.
Police have released the name of a woman who died Saturday while taking scuba diving lessons in a Jackson County lake. 54 year old Wendy Fassbender of Lodi was diving in Lake Wazee near Black River Falls when she stopped breathing while underwater in Wisconsin's deepest inland lake. It's not uncommon for the lake to be a popular spot to dive as last year alone there were over 1500 registered divers there.
