Bar Owner in Fight With Knife-Wielding, Coke Snorter
Always some excitement when you're in the bar business. A downtown La Crosse bar owner had to fight off a knife-wielding customer this week-end. Police say the owner caught Jose Vera-Mendoza in the bathroom snorting cocaine. The owner told Vera-Mendoza to hit the road. The two fought. The bar owner punched, Vera-Mendoza swung a knife. The owner got knicked on the hand and Vera-Mendoza left. Only to return the next night with a large group of young men, one of them with a gun in his waistband. Vera-Mendoza faces weapons and other charges. Cops are still looking for the guy with the gun.
Alcohol Testing for Past OWI Leads to Seventh Drunk Driving ArrestLa Crosse police didn't have to test Steven Wier on the breathalyzer for his seventh OWI. He'd already been tested. Wier was at Justice Sanctions in the county law enforcement center on Friday morning. He drove there in his van after breathing into the ignition breath lock to start the van. Apparently the device wasn't working because the 51 year old Wier tested over a .08 at Justice Sanctions. At nine o'clock in the morning. Prompting a call to police. And an arrest for drunk driving number seven. And a trip to lock-up, right next door. Without Pants, Asleep in a Parking Ramp: Ahh, CollegeCollege students often celebrate the end of a semester. Not all of them lose their pants. La Crosse police say they found a 22 year old guy passed out in the stairwell of a downtown parking ramp at around five Saturday morning. He was in boxers, t-shirt and socks. Said he'd gone downtown as a post-school celebration the night before. Not sure where his pants went or the cell phone or wallet that were inside the missing trousers. About three hours after bartime he still blew a .15. Cops gave the student a public intoxication warning and a ride home. Sources tell us Dr. Charles Miller hit a wall during a game at the Y-M-C-A on Saturday and was knocked unconscious. He had severe head and neck injuries, and died on Sunday. Miller was retired from Gundersen Lutheran. He had served as a school board member in La Crosse for many years, including the early 90's when several members were recalled for approving busing and school boundary changes. They're Off, On, Off Again; LED Billboards in La Crosse
So maybe there won’t be big flashing electronic billboards in the city of La Crosse after all. Last month, Olympus Media--formerly Collins sign in La Crosse--gained approval from the city council to put up some electronic led billboards in exchange for taking down a certain number of conventional billboards. But the council has decided to take another look at that plan and, next month may consider a moratorium on all electronic billboards until, at least, the specifics of how the billboards are used can be studied. |
