700 Minnesota Soldiers Assist Ebola Response

Written by

ROSEMOUNT, Minn. (AP) Nearly 700 Minnesota soldiers are being sent to West Africa to assist the U.S. military's response to the Ebola virus outbreak.

The Minnesota National Guard says the soldiers from the Rosemount-based 34th Red Bull Infantry Division will be deployed to Liberia in April after going through training. The deployment is expected to be for about six months.

Officials say the Minnesota soldiers will not be treating Ebola patients but will be asked to ``synchronize the operations, logistics, personnel and resources of the U.S. military forces assigned to the area.

The deadly Ebola virus has killed more than 5,000 people since the outbreak began.
Gov. Mark Dayton issued a statement thanking the soldiers for their ``heroic work.''

Postal Worker Protest

Written by

MILWAUKEE (AP) Postal workers in four Wisconsin cities plan to join colleagues around the country in protesting consolidation plans.

Postal Service centers in Wausau and La Crosse will be closed at the end of March. A postal center in Madison will be shuttered in June and another one in Eau Claire will close in September. The closures will result in a loss of 143 jobs in Wisconsin.

Nationwide, 78 other locations will be closed in January. Postal workers say the closures will result in slower mail service and lower service standards. The Journal Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1tQiRbX ) says nearly 150 demonstrations are planned around the country Friday.

The Postal Service says the closures are needed because of declining mail volume which has dropped by more than half over the last decade.
