Study: Governors Not in Control of Job Growth
Two things that control job numbers in Wisconsin: exchange rate of the dollar. National and international demand for goods. Neither of those controlled by the Wisconsin governor but set instead by forces beyond their influence says Joel Rogers with Center on Wisconsin Strategy. He says governor's shouldn't get credit or blame for job numbers. In fact, the group's new study shows how little impact Wisconsin governors have on job creation. Rogers says Walker's goal of 250 thousand new jobs in the state would be reached regardless of who was in the governor's office. Assuming, Rogers says, that the state's recovery from the recession was occurring at a normal pace.
District To Honor Partners In Coming MonthsThe Board of Education for the School District of La Crosse will honor Gundersen Lutheran for their service to and partnership with the district during last night's board meeting. Superintendent of Schools Jerry Kembe says he feels it is important that the public know how local organizations and businesses partner with the schools and make a significant difference in our students’ education.
Gundersen Lutheran is an active partner throughout the School District of La Crosse. Their child care center is a 4 year old preschool site and has been an active participant in the development of the district’s model preschool program. Gundersen employees provide countless presentations and programs to students each school year including hosting tours, sponsoring the middle school Health/Science Expo and providing job shadowing experiences. The Gundersen Lutheran Foundation’s Global Partners Program works with our schools to educate them about the needs and conditions of students in other countries and has linked our students’ fundraising efforts with schools across the globe. Gundersen Lutheran has been instrumental in the development of the district’s Health Science Academy and has been a long-time supporter of the Lincoln Middle School Medical Partnership program. Each of which has exposed students to the many careers and fields of study in the health care industry.
The honor is the first in a series of recognitions of business and organizations that the board will be presenting in the coming months.
Big Variations in Saturday Storm TotalsOfficially, La Crosse etched a record into the books by getting nearly five inches of rain on Saturday. But that was just for rainfall at the airport. A record of four and a half inches. Rain totals varied dramatically, however, across the city and region, according to the National Weather Service. The La Crosse weather station above the city measured just about an inch. The Onalaska-Holmen area had about three and half inches. Most of the city of La Crosse got about two inches. The National Weather Service says one measuring station in the city only got a half inch of rain. Dayton, Republicans No Closer to AgreementGov. Mark Dayton says a Republican offer to drop $200 million in tax cuts they wanted and spend it on his priorities is a ``non-proposal'' that gets the two sides no closer to a budget deal that would avert a government shutdown in two weeks. Voucher Expansion Added to BudgetOpponents of school vouchers fear Gov. Scott Walker could use his expansive veto powers to expand the program statewide under language added to the state budget early on Thursday morning by Assembly Republicans. |
