No Trapping Muskrats In Onalaska...For Now

Written by

Some critter comfort in Onalaska...

The city's park board is denying a request to trap muskrats in a conservancy area near Highway 53. A citizen asked the park department for permission to set traps in retention ponds at the Greens Coulee Park. Alderman Erik Sjolander tells us the park board could not find evidence that muskrats are creating a nuisance in that area. Outdoor experts say the price of muskrat pelts has increased sharply in the Midwest over the last two years.

BRF Prison Escapee Pair Serving Fed Time Now

Written by

Some final closure, prison time wise now for both men who escaped from a Black River Falls prison camp then went on a cross country crime spree before being recaptured. 30 year old James Newman of Black River Falls was given ten years federal time, for unlawfully possessing a stolen shotgun as a convicted felon. He had pleaded guilty to the charge in late June.

Last summer, Newman and 18 year old James Misleveck took off from Jackson County. After the escape, they stole a shotgun and abducted a woman near Black River Falls. She was released in Sparta. The two then traveled to Florida where they committed several crimes including the robbing and beating of a convenience store clerk.

In April, Misleveck was sentenced to a mandatory minimum 15 year federal prison sentence as an armed career criminal with three previous violent felony convictions.

Adams County Fire Update

Written by

One victim of the October 28th fatal house fire in Adams County has been identified as 79 year old Ronald Peak of the Town of Easton. Ronald’s wife, 77 year old Joann Peak survived the fire and remains hospitalized in Madison.

Investigators are still waiting for positive I.D. of the second fatality by DNA comparison.

The investigation revealed the fire started in a camper parked next to the house then spread to the mobile home. The yet unidentified man was found in the camper, and Ronald Peak was found in the mobile home. There is nothing to suggest that the fire was anything other than accidental at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
