Lacrosse Charter School Set To Open
Middle School students in the School District of La Crosse will have yet another option for learning beginning in the 2011-12 school year. La Crosse Design Institute, a charter school with design as the central theme for learning, will open September 1st. Forty students are currently registered to attend the school which will be housed at Longfellow Middle School.
Dr. Penny Reedy, the school’s principal says the School District of La Crosse learned this week that the charter school was awarded a $175 thousand implementation grant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The school received a planning grant for the same amount in April of 2010 to develop the curriculum for the school.

Should There Have Been Signs???Should there have been no swimming signs posted in an area where a 6 year old boy drowned in the Mississippi River last week? The family of Jr. Thao thinks so. The boy disappeared in the water last Monday at Pettibone Park. His body was recovered two days later. The boy's sister, Shoua Thao, says that the area should have had signs warning that it was dangerous to swim there. We checked with the Lacrosse city attorney's about the matter....they did not want to comment until a review of policies had been done first. Officials say the area where the family was swimming last Monday is dangerous because it's next to the main shipping channel and the currents are swift. Fight Over Presumed Theft Leads to ArsonA squabble over a couple bucks and a coat have led to an arson charge against a homeless guy in La Crosse. Cops say Thomas Hitchins was ticked off at his buddy for stealing some cash and his jacket. So the 78 year-old decided the appropriate response was to light up the guy's camper, piled high with his personal belongings. Hitchins at first told a cop he had nothing to do with the fire but later admitted the arson, tying it directly to the squabble between the two men. |
