Federal Job Estimates Paint Bleak Picture for Two Wisconsin Cities

If you agree that governor Walker's job numbers are the accurate ones, then you don't have to concern yourself with federal estimates regarding how poorly the state's two largest cities are doing compared to the rest of the biggest one hundred metro areas in the nation. The Walker administration released numbers this week showing Wisconsin actually gained jobs last year rather than losing over 33 thousand as was estimated previously by the feds. But those same estimates also show Madison and Milwaukee as the two of the three worst in the nation for job losses, ranking two and three behind only Augusta, Georgia. The twin cities, meanwhile, clocked in on the federal rankings as the 19th best metro area in the nation for job gains, adding nearly 20 thousand between March of last year and March of this year.

The people looking to help turtles across the road in La Crosse are much more varied this time around. Last year, it was seniors at a couple of assisted living centers on the southside who wanted the city to put up turtle crossing signs along East Avenue. The effort failed. Now a nearby daycare has gotten into the act. Sherry Skelton's the director there. She's turned into a sort-of turtle behaviorial specialist on their road-crossing habits

It's not too late to protect ash trees in La Crosse from the dreaded emerald ash borer... But tree owners who do want to treat their plants with pesticide should start now. Gar Amunson, the city parks superintendent, says City Hall does not have a policy on whether to pay for chemicals, or just cut the trees down. Amunson says if those trees in the city are not treated, they are all likely to die within five years. The ash borer was first detected in La Crosse last fall.

More than a dozen cases of whooping cough in La Crosse County just this month is a cause for concern among nurses and doctors... Health professionals recommend a vaccine for those who are not sick, and anti-biotics for people who are infected. Bridget Pfaff , an infection specialist from Gundersen Lutheran, says people with pertussis might not know it right away, because symptoms are similar to allergies. But once you have it, you can feel effects of the illness for weeks. Infants up to six months old can have the most severe reaction to pertussis, getting pneumonia or even dying. A rural Kendall man is clinging to life today after being pinned by a farm tractor. It happened just before 7 last night in the Town of Wellington in Monroe County. The Sheriff says the family of a 69 year old man went looking for him after he had not retured home. They found the man pinned under a farm tractor that had flipped over. The man had to be carried out of the woods by hand by the Ontario Fire department members. He was transported to Gunderson Hospital by Med Link Air with life threatening injuries.
