Cops: Guy More Perpetrator Than Defender

Written by
La Crosse cops have seized a sizable cache of weapons from a Viterbo student.

Cops say they've arrested Micheal Kohutko on a number of charges for some squabbles with his girlfriend. They say the 25 year-old gave the woman bruises after the last throwdown and, some time ago, held a loaded .357 to her head while he threatened her. Kohutko admits to pointing the gun at the victim but says it was because she hit him. He also claims the bruises were a result of "rough sex." Following a court order, police have seized four handguns, two rifles and a shotgun plus hundreds of rounds of ammo from Kohutko, who is, they say identifiable by a tattoo in Latin that reads "defensor femunus." Roughly translated as, "defender of women."

Man Reports Robbery in La Crosse

Written by
A La Crosse guy is nursing his wounds after a beat down and robbery this week-end. Cops say the 25 year-old was walking home from the bars downtown on Saturday morning when he was jumped by an SUV full of guys. One of the guys apparently thought the victim had been talking smack about his brother. They got his phone, a bunch of cash, even his house key. They left behind cuts, bruises and, what police say, looks like shoe print on the side of the victim's head. Police say they do have a suspect.

Cold, Homeless Guy Rescued, Arrested

Written by
La Crosse police have run across another person who might be a good candidate for a coming warming center for the homeless in the city. Police say this guy was stumbling down the street in blizzard conditions early Sunday morning. He'd fallen down a few times. Was covered with snow. Wearing only a t-shirt. Homeless guy. Said he'd been drinking at numerous bars downtown.. But otherwise was pretty incoherent with frostbite and hypothermia starting to set in and snow frozen to his face. Police took him to the hospital. At that point, the 53 year-old got a little cantankerous and uncooperative, forcing police to take him to jail.

Snow Removal Tuesday in La Crosse

Written by
Big, chunky piles of snow still cover the sidewalks in downtown La Crosse. In some areas, it looks like you're walking through a tunnel. Much of that goes away tomorrow night. The city says snow removal downtown will begin tomorrow night and continue for several nights until done. Although scooping the snow will create more space on streets and sidewalks, while the removal process is occurring, the city warns against driving over some of the big berms and piles that will be created in the streets by city crews,.

High Speed Rail De-railed

Written by
A "tragic moment"........"they shot themselves in the financial foot and "economic suicide.” All phrases being used by Wisconsin Democrats today as the news came down that the U.S. Department of Transportation will take back $810 million in federal high-speed rail funding that Wisconsin received.

Representative Jennifer Shilling says it's a tragic time for the state and Governor Elect School Walker just cost this state thousands of new jobs.

The monies will now be reallocated to several states including California, Florida, Washington, Illinois, New York, and Iowa.

First, it was vacant positions in the La Crosse fire department that were desperately needed to get filled.   Then it was the police department.  But should those vacancies remain.....vacant?  That's what city council president, Audrey Kader and mayor Matt Harter are hoping to determine with the help of a consultant.  Kader and Harter, almost never on the same side of any issue, are pushing a proposal for a consultant to study both fire and police needs in the city.  Although the mayor has made it clear he thinks both departments can do more with less, he's also advocated for an evaluation of both.  Meanwhile, Kader says she's simply unsure what the ideal staffing requirements for either department are.  The council will vote on the consultant proposal next month.
