Poverty Percentages Even Higher for Kids

As poverty plagues families in the area, children from those families give additional challenges to school districts. New census numbers show La Crosse county to be one of the poorest in Wisconsin. With a total poverty level of just under 15 percent. In the La Crosse school district, the poverty level is a little higher for all students in the district; about 16 percent. That's a third higher than just ten years ago. Meanwhile, Onalaska's poverty rate among all students in the district is hovering at ten percent. Holmen is at about nine percent. Both of those districts have also had increases in poverty in the last ten years.
