La Crosse High on Taxes, Low on Income

Saying, "we're number one," feels pretty good sometimes. But not when it's number one in taxes. According to the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance new report on spending and taxing in state munipalities, La Crosse holds the dubious distinction of having the highest tax rate among 23 like-sized cities. La Crosse's city property tax levy was $11.60 in 2010 and, according to the alliance, saw the third highest jump in the levy among the state's mid-sized cities. Among those same cities, La Crosse also has one of the lowest levels of income per taxpayer.
