Safe Route Not Really Safe Route

The idea behind a sidewalk expansion to Southern Bluffs elementary in La Crosse wasn't a bad one. The idea was to create a safe route to school. But, when the half million dollar project's done next month, kids will still have to cross highway 35 to get to Southern Bluffs. So will kids actually use the route to get to school?  Southern Bluffs principal Mary Lin Wershofen says it's possible that more kids will use the reconstructed path, but because of a lack of a safe way to crosse the highway, she won't be promoting it as a safe route to school. The sidewalk expansion has been largely funded by the feds, with the city of La Crosse picking up the 29 thousand dollar design tab.
