When archeaology students and staff from UW-L found remains of an indian village below the newly constructed Highway 35 in Onalaska last year, some were surprised while others weren't phased...since this wasn't the first time they had seen remnants of the Oneota (OWNEE-OHTAH) culture. Kathy Stevenson, is an MVAC researcher.

The culture flourished in the La Crosse and Onalaska area from about A.D. 1300 to 1600. The Mississippi Valley Archeaology Center recieved a DOT award recently for their work on the findings in Onalaska.
