Winona Plants Japanese Cherry Trees

An international celebration in Winona on Sunday, with the city welcoming visitors from Japan to help plant cherry trees donated to Winona by the Japanese government.

The main purpose of the celebration was to plant the trees in Lake Park. Kwetsu Sasaki is mayor of Misato, Winona's sister city in Japan. He says the gift to Winona has been in the works a long time, but was delayed.

Three dozen American cities are receiving the trees from Japan this year, marking the 100th anniversary of when cherry trees were donated to Washington, D-C.
