April Fool's Story Uproar
Is the 32 mile Sparta-Elroy trail being sold to Disney? Seems as though that was the story around western Wisconsin last week. And it turns out, it was all a practical joke. But to some, it wasn't too funny. A local newspaper, The County Line in Ontario, followed their annual tradition of posting odd April Fool's stories...but this one got all the way to the capitol. A story Friday stated that Disney was buying the trail used by thousands every year as a walking and biking trail. After several concerned residents called their area lawmakers and the Department of Natural Resources, spokesman Bill Cosh, said that the sale was a joke and was never planned. And Disney could not just buy it anyway as the trail would first have to be identified to the public as no longer needed for conservation, and would need approval by the state Natural Resources Board and governor.
