3 County Commuter Bus Gets Green Light

A three county commuter bus project, with three weekly routes to the cities of Viroqua, Prairie du Chien, La Crosse and the surrounding communities, was killed dead in it's tracks last year. Funding from the DOT was frozen. But now those funds have thawed...and the bus plan is back on. So how would it work?

Peter Fletcher of the Mississippi Valley Regional Planning Commission says Prairie du Chien has approved $20 thousand to the plan, while the smaller communities of Coon Valley, Genoa, Soldiers Grove and Gays Mills all contributed around $1000. La Crosse County is looking at contributing $7-$8,000. The DOT will pick up the other 61% of the cost. After a bid for busses goes out next month, the busses should be rolling in early May.

Which DOT is adding funds: WI or federal? Either way, this is a local issue and 61% of the funding should not be coming from outside the area. 1% of the funding should not be coming from outside the area. If the local municipalities want it, then they should be prepared to shoulder 100% of the burden for their local service.
