NEW JAIL, NO BASEMENT

IT WILL BE CHEAPER TO REPLACE SOME BAD SOIL THAN TO BUILD A BASEMENT IN ITS PLACE.

THAT'S ONE REASON WHY HOUSTON COUNTY HAS DECIDED NOT TO ADD A BASEMENT TO ITS PLANS FOR A NEW COUNTY JUSTICE CENTER. SOIL AT THE COURTHOUSE SITE IN CALEDONIA WAS FOUND TO BE UNSTABLE, AND IT WILL BE REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH A MORE STABLE FOUNDATION.  HOUSTON COUNTY BOARD CHAIRMAN LARRY CONNERY SAYS INCLUDING A BASEMENT COULD HAVE ADDED CLOSE TO A MILLION DOLLARS TO THE BUILDING COST. ALSO, THAT CHANGE DIDN'T FIT INTO A LAND DEAL WITH THE CITY OF CALEDONIA. CONSTRUCTION ON THE NEW JAIL COULD START AS SOON AS THIS MAY.
