YMCA collaborating with organizations to get kids fed this summer

There are multiple ways children in the area can get a free meal throughout summer and it appears to be much needed.

"In La Crosse County, about 17 percent of kids are food insecure, which means they may not know where their next meal is coming from," Lisa Luckey, the youth and teen director at the La Crosse Area YMCA said.

Offering free meals is the Salvation Army, Boys and Girls Club, School District of La Crosse, Gundersen Health System, as well as the YMCA.

The YMCA meal program is for children 18 and under. Last summer it gave out 10,000 meals. The organization anticipates it will distribute 200,000 meals throughout 2018 in La Crosse County.

Luckey says there's a lot of collaboration between the entities.

"We've worked with Gundersen, as well as the Salvation Army to identify, what are some of those populations where we may not be serving or the areas we may not be serving and can one of us spread into that spot," she said.
