Area veterans find out tonight if they're taking Freedom Honor Flight to D.C. Featured

Written by

The next two Freedom Honor Flights between La Crosse and Washington have been announced.

And, tonight, those 100 veterans will get a call inviting them to take part in the May 12 flight — the other flight is Sept. 15 — to see war memorials in the nation's capital.

Nearly all of the local WWII veterans who signed up for flights in the last 10 years have taken their trips. Only three remain on the waiting list.

Honor Flight president Pat Stephens tells us who's at the top of the waiting list now:

"Currently, we have three WWII veterans left, and 82 Korean veterans," Stephens said. "And, now we can start into our Vietnam (War) veterans."

All veterans living within about 100 miles of La Crosse are invited to register for a local honor flight.

Cash donations are welcomed to keep the flights going, as each flight costs over $120,000 to arrange.
